Swanson County

Swanson County
Although only few know of this awkward ordeal, in 1910 and 1911 Kiowa and Comanche counties joined together to form Swanson County. Swanson County lasted less than 11 months. On August 13, 1910, at 11:00 p.m. Governor C. N. Haskell proclaimed the area, between the northern end of Comanche county and the correction line just north of Roosevelt, Swanson County. Right from the beginning, Swanson County was not destined to have a long life. The citizens could not agree on where the county seat, the town that is the political center of a county, should have been. Many wanted Mountain Park while others wanted it to be Snyder. Governor Haskell decided to draw the name from a hat. Mountain Park was chosen to be county seat.
People who wanted Snyder to be county seat were hostile and on September 5th a group took records from Mountain Park. In return Mountain Park officials claimed all business in Snyder was illegal. A warrant was issued for the arrest of Swanson County commissioners. When deputies arrived to arrest a commissioner at his house, a hired hand named Slater was shot and killed. In March of 1911, State Supreme Court set Mountain Park as county seat and Snyder returned the records. On June 1, 1911 the Supreme Court disbanded Swanson County claiming it was formed illegally. According to Oklahoma law, each county must have 1500 residents and Swanson only had 1200.
